According to Betty Crocker’s Picture Cook Book, dated 1950, Hush Puppies came from Florida. The story goes like this…
‘Toothsome morsels from Florida hunters. When they sat around their camp fish-fries, their hunting dogs would whine for the good smelling food. The men tossed leftover corn patties to the call, “Hush, puppies!”. Satisfied, the dogs hushed. These crispy little corn cakes made a hit at Daytona Beach, Florida, served with fried shrimp and cole slaw.’
And who thought cookbooks were just for cooking?
